The Rich History of Kanata

Last updated on May 11th, 2021 at 12:56 pm

Years ago Kanata was largely comprised of farmland, but it has since evolved into the largest suburb in all of Ottawa today. Before it became amalgamated in 2001, Kanata was one of the fastest growing cities in all of Canada because of its high-tech industry. Presently, Kanata still hosts some of the biggest tech companies and is continuing to grow. It also has many attractions, amenities, and exciting family orientated activities.

To learn more about the rich history of Kanata and how the area became the bustling suburb it is today, read on.

Early Years

First settled by Europeans in the early nineteenth century, Kanata remained dominantly agricultural until the 1960s. During this time a developer purchased a large amount of land and started to transform it into the city it has become today. Kanata quickly converted from farmland to an area of mixed-use, commercial and residential property. It was soon divided into a series of communities with their own commercial centres that reflected their unique cultures.

Surrounded by a greenbelt and scattered with beautiful open space, it grew into an attractive city with lots to offer. With bustling commercial centres combined with livable spaces, it became an attractive opportunity for businesses, and the town quickly grew into a city by 1978.

The Rich History of Kanata

High-Tech Centre

Over time, the city grew into a popular high-tech node, attracting big names like IBM, HP, BlackBerry, Nokia, Dell Canada, Nortel Networks, and Cisco, to name a few. The Kanata North Business Park was often called the Silicon Valley North in the late 1990s.

Since the high-tech boom, the industry has been growing steadily, resulting in more demand for land, housing, and office space. To meet this need, 1500 acres of land in the west has been zoned for development to house over 2 million square feet of commercial development and named Kanata West Business Park. Once completed it will become the major new employment node in the west end of the city.

Balanced Community

Kanata is considered to be the most balanced community in Ottawa. It offers an environment in which you can live, work, and play. Over the years it has grown into an area with beautiful parks and greenspaces, vast amenities, ample shopping, exquisite dining, and one of the biggest high-tech areas in Canada. Those who wish to live here can find a variety of single-family homes and condos to meet just about every budget.
