Why We Love December in Ottawa

Why we love December in Ottawa.

Each year as the holiday season arrives, the city of Ottawa comes alive to embrace the wintery wonderland that offers so much festivity and joy. This isn’t a city that will shy away from the cold – we embrace it! And this December, like each year, there are countless activities that you and the family can partake in to get outside and into the holiday spirit. Here are just a few reasons why we love December in Ottawa and why so many others do too.

Taking in the Christmas Lights on Parliament Hill

If there’s one tradition we all love to embrace here in Ottawa, it’s taking in the beautiful view as our city sky lights up with Christmas lights on Parliament Hill, and all throughout the city. More than 400,000 Christmas lights glow in the downtown area, and there is a nightly sound and light show that runs until Christmas Day. Make sure you stop by Confederation Park, which is aglow with red and white bulbs in celebration of our nation’s 150th birthday.

Warming Up at the ByWard Market

The ByWard Market is one of those spots in the city that is always bustling with activity. Whether summer or winter, here you will find an exciting vibe and tons of delicious goods to indulge in. What better way to warm up than with some hot chocolate and hot apple cider while browsing through the market? Throw on your scarf and mitts and get some maple hot chocolate to keep you warm as you stroll along with the family. There’s no better place in the city to find one-of-a-kind local, artisanal holiday gifts for friends and family.

Take the Skates Out on the Outdoor Rinks

December is usually when the winter really begins to arrive. So thankfully, you can usually count on it to be perfect for all of those outdoor skating rinks to open. Finally, you can dust off those skates and take the kids out to the rink for some fun on the ice. Once the weather gets cold enough, favourites include the Sens Rink of Dreams at City Hall and the rink at Ben Franklin Place in Nepean, or you can swing by your local outdoor rink for a game of pickup or just a family skate. And of course, there’s also the longest outdoor skating rink in the world, the Rideau Canal!

Cozy up Inside with Amazing Shopping

Ottawa has some impressive destinations when it comes to shopping. If you’re not so enthused about spending time outside during the winter, then hop on inside to one of the many places where you can stay toasty and spend some time shopping. You can head to Rideau Centre, Bayshore or Tanger Outlets to scoop up some amazing deals for those Christmas lists.

December is when the winter and holiday season really start to shine. The city comes alive with lights and activities that embrace the holiday spirit. So head out to the rink with the kids, to the ByWard for a night stroll with that special someone, or get that Christmas list started by taking on the amazing shopping destinations that are in and around the city. With the energy of the season in full swing, it’s no surprise why we simply love December in Ottawa.
