How to Create More Indoor Space During the Winter Months

Last updated on November 1st, 2021 at 11:25 am

Being stuck inside for such a long period of time during the winter makes it an ideal time to reevaluate your layout and think of how you can change it up to even make it appear bigger and brighter. To help make your home feel more spacious and comfortable, here’s how to create more indoor space during the winter months.

Maximize Natural Light

With less daylight and longer nights during the winter, it can make any indoor space feel dark and depressing. But one simple way to brighten your space and enjoy the sunshine as much as you can is by maximizing your natural light. If you have thick curtains draped along each side of your windows, these can block out a significant amount of light, even when they’re pulled open. To maximize the sunshine, add a hook to either side so you can pull them back completely and allow as much light to filter inside as possible. Placing mirrors adjacent to your windows is another excellent way to invite more sunshine in and reflect it around your interior.

Get Rid of the Clutter

Simply put, the less junk you have, the bigger your home will appear. If you have cluttered closets, drawers or bulky furniture taking up every inch of space in your home, now is a perfect time to reassess what you need and what you can get rid of. Decluttering will make your home look more spacious while increasing airflow and eliminating musty odours. It’ll also make you feel great when everything is neat, organized and has a purpose.

Reshuffle Your Layout

Once you’ve eliminated the excess clutter, you can play around with your layout. Try moving your furniture around to see if there are other ways to be more strategic with the space you have. If you’ve been working from the kitchen table, you might find more space in a corner of your living room or in a spare room where you can create a home office.

Optimize Your Storage

Even if you’re limited on storage space, there are many unique ways to really maximize this too. For example, placing shelves towards the ceiling is a great way to add more storage so you can keep items away, off of the floor and out of sight. Having a decluttered and tidy home can create more space indoors and get your home ready to show off to prospective buyers.
