19 May Upcoming Festivals in Ottawa
There is no doubt that Ottawa has its charms in the winter (Winterlude) and spring (Tulip Festival), but the National Capital Region truly shines in the summer. Once festival season hits, it is time for event after event of non-stop entertainment. If you live in Ottawa, here are some of the more exciting festivals to keep an eye on in the coming months:
Ottawa Fringe Festival (June 18-28, 2015)
Hosted at a dozen downtown venues but centered around Arts Court on Daly Avenue, the Ottawa Fringe Festival is a celebration of the performing arts. Performers and the audience are united through a love of theatre, dance, music, poetry, and comedy. 100% of proceeds go directly the artists, and you never know what to expect in any given year.
Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival (June 25-28, 2015)
North America’s largest dragon boat festival happens in Ottawa every year at Mooney’s Bay Park. More than 200 teams will participate, including one sponsored by Geoff & Bobbie McGowan! Even if you’re not a racer, there’s plenty of fun to enjoy beyond the boats. With free concerts, delicious food, ice cold beer, and plenty of activities for kids, the Dragon Boat Festival is fun for the whole family.
Canada Day (July 1, 2015)
Even if you don’t live in Ottawa, every Canadian should come experience Canada Day on Parliament Hill once in their life. Grab your brightest red shirt from the closet, break out the facepaint, and head to downtown Ottawa for a wild celebration of the true north strong and free. Don’t miss the stunning firework display in celebration of Canada’s birthday once the sun goes down.
Bluesfest (July 8-19, 2015)
Come down to Lebreton Flats to see some of the world’s hottest musical acts. Kanye West, Iggy Azalea, Keith Urban, and Canadian icons The Tragically Hip and Blue Rodeo are just some of the huge names playing at this year’s festival. Aside from the big names, head to one of the side stages to witness some of the planet’s most talented blues musicians work their magic.
HOPE Volleyball (July 11, 2015)
Make a difference in your community while playing beach volleyball at Mooney’s Bay – what’s not to love? HOPE is a happening summer party in support of a great cause, so come watch even if your serves and spikes are a little rusty. It’s a hot Saturday in the middle of summer, so make sure you’re prepared. Hats, sunscreen, and water are all absolute musts.
No matter where you live in Ottawa, make a point of heading out to at least one of these unforgettable summer events in the city.
