Upcoming October Events in Ottawa

Last updated on May 11th, 2021 at 01:10 pm

What is your favourite season in Ottawa? Are you partial to the frosty days of Winterlude, the vibrant tulips of spring, or the warm and relaxing days of summer? Despite the strong arguments made by these other seasons, fall in Ottawa has to be the best season of all. There is nothing like walking through Gatineau Park as the leaves change, gathering with family for Thanksgiving, or sipping Pumpkin Spiced Lattés with old friends or new loves.

In addition to the simple beauty of living in Ottawa this time of year, there are also many great events happening in the coming month. We’ve compiled our favourite events and activities to keep you busy this month:

Whether you want to celebrate your Bavarian heritage, or simply love the idea of a weekend with great drinks, great music, and great company, Oktoberfest is definitely up your alley. Barrhaven’s Clarke Fields Park is host to Oktoberfest Ottawa, a rollicking cultural celebration. Sip on Creemore Springs’ Pure Bohemian Lager, True Dusseldorf Altbier, or for Citra Trebbiano d’Abruzzo for the wine lovers. Combine it with tasty delights from local food trucks (including Ross’ Bavarian sausages!) and great music (of the Bavarian and country variety), and this is a can’t miss event. If you still aren’t satisfied, head to Beau’s Oktoberfest in Vankleek Hill for more!

Ottawa Senators Home Opener

On October 11th, the Ottawa Senators face off against the Montreal Canadiens in the Battle of the 417. The last time these two teams met, Montreal disposed of Ottawa 3-2 in the opening round of the 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs. The Ottawa Senators will be looking for a much different fate this time around. The crowd will be a rowdy mix of fans of both teams, so get your tickets now or gather in front of the big screen at home for puck drop.

Fall Poutine Fest

If that isn’t the best three words in a row, I don’t know what is. Sparks Street. October 16 to 18. Poutine. Beautiful fall weather. Bring an empty stomach and your best fork, because it’s time to dig in! Admission is free, you only pay for what you eat. So yes, bring a full wallet.

Farmer’s Markets

Whether you want to cook up some creative meals using the best local produce or want to stock up on fresh ingredients for your Thanksgiving feast, time is ticking. Most farmer’s markets are beginning to wrap up this month, so don’t miss your chance to pick up beautiful produce, flowers, baked goods and more. The Metcalfe Market (October 17), Main Street Market (October 24) and Carp Market (October 24) all wrap up soon.

And of course, the month wraps up on Halloween night, which happens to fall on a Saturday this month. In addition to a safe and spooky Halloween night, the whole month of October promises some scary fun. The Ottawa Zombie Walk stumbles through downtown in October; a Zombie Adventure takes over the Diefenbunker from October 10 to 31; Haunted ghost walks are available on Sparks Street all month long; Pumpkinferno lights up Upper Canada Village this month; and October is Haunting Season at Saunder’s Farm. Boo!

Nothing beats living in Ottawa, especially not during the stunning fall months.
