Ottawa Neighbourhood Schools

The school year is just around the corner, and Ottawa area families are feeling the excitement! If you just recently bought Ottawa real estate, or will be relocating to Ottawa, Ontario soon and feel a bit concerned about your child being ready to start his or her first day at one of the outstanding Ottawa area schools, then here are a few quick tips that can help ease your child into this new phase of life.

Getting Ready For Ottawa Public and Private Schools

There are many things to think about as you prepare your children for a new school year-backpacks, school supplies, bus schedules, and after-school activities.  However, for anyone that has children going to school for the first time, or for anyone that will be soon moving with kids to new Ottawa real estate, there are a few tips to follow to get your children off to a great start (and stay ahead!) through the coming school year.

Tips  For Ottawa School Readiness

  • Read To Your Children-this is one of the best ways to keep a child’s mind sharp. Fluency in reading and comprehension gives children the advantage in all other subjects, including math and science.
  • Make Sure Your Child Gets Enough Sleep-Sleep experts form the national Sleep Foundation say kids need plenty of rest (8-10 hours a night) in order to perform well at school
  • Emphasize the Positive-Children are incredibly honed in on their parent’s attitudes. If you speak negatively about a teacher, or having to buy school items, the kids will pick up on it and it will start them off on a negative attitude towards school . Certainly don’t complain about helping with homework-do what you can to stay positive and keep it light and fun and you will start to see your children enjoying their work with you  (and the great one on one time you spend together on homework!)
  • Practice Handwriting And Spelling-Helping your child learn to write part or all of his name before the start of kindergarten will provide a huge boost to his or her confidence. It would be GREAT if  your child could write their name correctly, know their numbers to 20 say the alphabet and letter phonetics, and know basic shapes and colors-knowing these skills going in will make settling in easier for him or her AND will provide a fantastic base for their future learning.
