The new, upcoming year of 2017 is expected to be one of the best ever in the city of Ottawa. We all remember how epic the 125 celebrations were back in 1992, and this should outdo those events by far. With Canada celebrating its 150th year, our nation’s capital is expected to put on a series of transformative, immersive, and exciting events to make it bigger and better than ever. Here are some highlights for what you can expect.
New Year’s Celebration
Kick off the New Year by taking in the energy, lights, sights and sounds of the city down at Ottawa City Hall? Here you can help countdown the kickoff together with the entire nation, while watching as Ottawa-area students form a human chain, to celebrate our diversity and nation.
All year long, you can look forward to spontaneous and spectacular displays of stunts and performances throughout regions of the city to lighten your day. Ignite 150 is set to shaken your thoughts and lighten your day by providing random acts and performances to highlight the magical and wonder of this great city and country.
Ottawa Welcomes the World
What better way to celebrate the 150th year of our nation than by inviting embassies and high commissions from around the world to celebrate with us? Multiculturalism is a significant part of who we are as Canadians and what we stand for. So join in as we mark the country’s national celebration at the Aberdeen Pavilion and the Horticulture Building all year long in 2017. Here you can indulge in food tastings, musical celebrations, artistic performances, as well as film from around the globe to show our love and appreciation for diversity.
Inspiration Village at the ByWard Market
The ByWard Market is one of the main hubs of activity in the city of Ottawa. But the city is cranking up that entertainment with the Inspiration Village (May 20 – September 4). This will be an ephemeral hub for special exhibits and performances to highlight the regions of Canada. With top designers and architects, old shipping crates will be transformed into exciting public exhibits and hubs for public programming.
Canada Day, C-150 Party
Of course, there’s no better place to fully embrace Canada’s 150th birthday than by celebrating in the city of Ottawa for Canada Day on July 1st. And this year, you can bet it will be something spectacular! You can head down to the Shaw Centre where you can party it up with incredible theatrical performances, live music, and Canadian cuisine prepared by some of Canada’s top chefs.
The Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata will be home to the Juno Awards on April 2, 2017, broadcast live on CTV. The Juno Awards are Canada’s version of the Grammys and reward the best in Canadian music in the past year. Nominees for this year’s ceremony will be announced on February 7. This year’s host is none other than smooth throwback crooner Michael Bublé, so you definitely don’t want to miss it.
All hands are on deck for the 150th anniversary celebrations, sports included. The defending Grey Cup champion Ottawa REDBLACKS will have a chance to go for the two-peat on home field as TD Place hosts the 105th Grey Cup on November 26. The Ottawa Senators, meanwhile, have festivities of their own. While details are still being planned, you can tentatively pencil in an outdoor game between the Senators and Montreal Canadiens on Dec 19th in celebration of the National Hockey League’s 100th year anniversary.
This upcoming year of 2017 is expected to be one of the best yet for the city of Ottawa. The line up for activities, events, performances and immersive experiences will truly give you and the entire family something to get excited about in the New Year!
