Moving Seniors? Here’s 5 Ways You Can Ease the Situation

Moving a senior loved one into a new home can be very challenging. There are many factors to consider to ensure that the transition goes smoothly and caters to their health and finances. From organizing, to packing, to selling their home, there are many things you have to be prepared for. Fortunately, if you’re moving seniors, here’s five ways you can ease the situation.
Organize Well in Advance
Before you start packing, it’s important to plan out the whole move from beginning to end. This includes understanding what rooms will need to be furnished, how big the new area is compared to the old home, and what belongings your loved one will want to hold onto. Plotting the floor plan and doing some deciding ahead of time can help you determine what will have to stay and what can go, which can make the next step much easier.
Give Them Time to Reminisce
Packing for seniors can be emotional, especially if they’re saying goodbye to the family home. So it’s important to give your loved one plenty of time to organize their belongings and reminisce about their keepsakes. They will likely to be emotionally attached to many personal belongings, so it will take them longer to pack and let go of what will have to be left behind. So don’t rush through it and try to pack up everything for them. Give them the time they need to enjoy their memories and help guide them along the way.
Help Them Clean and Repair
After all the packing is done, there’s still a lot of work left to do before the move. The house will need a thorough cleaning, and any required repairs will need to be completed. Now’s the time to enlist some family members and friends to participate. If that isn’t a viable option, you can always hire a house cleaning service and handyman to take care of the work for you.
Hire a Moving Company
You can save yourself a lot of work and hassle by hiring a full service moving company. They can help you pack, load the truck, transport all the belongings safely to the new home, and unpack as well. This will come at a price, so if you’d like to explore more affordable options, you may want to consider having friends and family pack and unpack the truck and just pay for the moving truck. If you go with this option, just remember to move all the boxes into the appropriate rooms for your loved ones before leaving. Better yet, stay a few days and help them get everything sorted.
Hire an Accredited Seniors Agent
Getting packed and unpacked is only half the battle. Getting the home sold and finding the perfect new one is where the real work lies. Hiring the right agent can make the whole process go that much smoother — Our SRES® (Senior Real Estate Specialist®) designation ensure attentive, expert-level service.
