7 Ways to Take Advantage of the Cold Weather in Ottawa

Though the winter season brings frigid cold temperatures, there are still several ways to take advantage of the cold weather in Ottawa. With a little preparation and a great list of must-do activities on hand, you can stay warm and happy all season long. Here are our favourite activities to take advantage of both outdoors and indoors during the winter months.
The city of Ottawa is home to the Rideau Canal Skateway – the world’s largest outdoor natural skating rink. Every year in January, approximately 7.8 kilometers of the canal turns into a massive rink for everyone to enjoy. People come from all over to get their chance to skate on the canal and enjoy this Canadian tradition.
Head to Winterlude
Even when the temperature dips well below -15 degrees, Ottawans find a way to enjoy it and embrace the winter by throwing their own festival. That’s right! Ottawa is host to the greatest winter festival in North America – Winterlude. For three weekends straight in February, you can enjoy skating, sports events, outdoor concerts, rare performances, ice sculpture competitions, and snow playgrounds right here in the capital. It’s truly a one of a kind winter experience worth checking out!
Hit the Trails
Looking for a way to break through the winter blues? Spending a sunny afternoon on the trails will give you an instant boost of those feel-good hormones. Whether you hike, snowshoe, cross country ski or fat bike, there are a number of trails in the city that are routinely groomed during the wintertime. There’s even one right downtown and alongside the Ottawa River – the Sir John A. Macdonald Winter Trail. It offers 16km of easy-moderate level trails that perfect for hiking, snowshoeing and getting in some vitamin D.
Ride the Hills
As soon as the snow starts to fall, the tobogganing hills become a hot spot for kids (and adults) to enjoy. Where to go? Windsor Park, Hog’s Back Park, and Bruce Pit are just three of the many popular hills in the city that will give you and the fam hours of fun this winter.
See a Movie
On those cold nights that prevent you from enjoying the outdoors, head to Cineplex and take advantage of the “VIP Dinner at the Movies” on Wednesdays that offer two VIP tickets, one shareable app, two main entrees, and one dessert for $69. Got kids to entertain? Families can take advantage of the Saturday morning special that plays a family favourite movie on the big screen at 11 am for only $2.99.
Who doesn’t love bowling? It’s fun, entertaining, and it’s also indoors. Plus, there are a number of easy-to-get-to bowling alleys in the city that offer both 5 and 10 pin lanes. Some also offer Friday and Saturday Night Rock n’ Bowl events that transform the alley into a lively music and light display.
Visit the Museum
Once you start feeling a little squirrely from being stuck inside for days, head down to one of the museums in the city to kill your boredom. Every Thursday night, the museums in the city offer free admission from 5 pm to 8 pm to give families both fun and affordable night out.
