5 Reasons Why We Are Proud to Call Ottawa Home
There’s something discernably unique about Ottawa. Though it may not receive the same amount of recognition as other neighbouring cities like Montreal or Toronto, it’s a city that doesn’t need it. Ask any locals and they’ll emphatically tell you why they love it – the friendly people, the low crime rate, the slower pace, ample job opportunities, being so close to nature, and having an impressive variety of festivals, cozy pubs, cafes and more to enjoy and explore. Learn more about why we’re proud to call Ottawa home, and why you just might too!
It’s a Walkable City
Ottawa is often known as a big little town because that’s just what it feels like. It’s smaller, compact and walkable. This makes it incredibly easy to get in and around the city. You can walk from Centretown to Little Italy to Parliament Hill or even the Byward Market in about 30 minutes or less. No matter where you are downtown, you’re always within walking distance of major sites and hubs in the city.
It’s Not Big and Overwhelming
Unlike our other major cities with sprawling populations, Ottawa’s smaller size also makes it much tamer and far less stressful or overwhelming. Even when walking around during rush hour, you’re not slammed with the same overbearing noise, traffic, and people as you would be in Toronto. For those who don’t enjoy the hustle and bustle of big city life but still want a great urban centre with plenty to see and do – Ottawa could be a great fit.
Whether you have a young family or are single, Ottawa is a place where you can come and feel at ease. In fact, it’s been ranked as one of the safest in the country. Of course, there will always be pockets of crime in any city, but Ottawa’s slower pace and family-oriented communities make it a less attractive place for crime to thrive in.
There’s Always Something Happening
Just because it’s a slower-paced city, doesn’t mean it’s boring! The City of Ottawa hosts a diverse range of events, activities, and festivals all throughout the year — from Winterlude to Jazz Fest to Tulip Fest to Fringe Fest to Beer Fest — there is truly a fest for everyone. It also boasts an impressive selection of bars, pubs, clubs, and restaurants that can satisfy any vibe, mood or craving.
You’re So Close to Nature
Ottawans love to get out and enjoy time in nature. And when you live here, it’s incredibly easy to do. Being nestled in such a green part of Ontario gives residents easy access to a variety of lush spaces. You can hike through Gatineau, canoe at Dow’s Lake, lounge on a patio overlooking the Rideau Canal or even head out to enjoy the sprawling countryside that surrounds this city.
