4 Green Holiday Decorating Ideas

Last updated on May 11th, 2021 at 12:58 pm

There’s nothing quite like getting the kids together and getting crafty with some homemade decoration projects. It’s not only a great way to practice and encourage sustainable, eco-friendly living, but it lets the whole family spend some quality time together, making decorations that you can enjoy for years to come.

So this holiday season, get crafty and eco-friendly with these four green holiday decorating ideas!

Ornaments made from Old Sweaters

Got any old sweaters lying around? Maybe even some of those really ugly Christmas ones you never wear? Well if you do, they can make the perfect decorations for the tree or just to hang around your home. You can simply cut the sweaters into a template shape of your choice – tree, stars, or hearts, for example. Then stuff them with some old rags or fabric. Stitch them up with a button or two for the center, and voila! You have your own adorable ornaments that you can pop on the tree.

Timber Reindeer

A great way to bring that rustic, cottage vibe to your décor is by creating some cute little timber reindeer. Now, the trick is finding the appropriate timber to use for constructing the reindeer, but once you do, it’s so worth it! All you need is a thick enough piece for the torso, two long, narrow branches for the legs, and some pieces for the neck, head, and of course, the antlers. Then just pop them together with a few nails and add on the eyes, ears, and of course a shiny red nose!

Pinecone Santa Faces

A great decoration idea that the kids can really get involved with is making pinecone Santa faces or even reindeers. Forage some good cones around your neighbourhood in Ottawa and then start creating your faces. Add a nose at the narrow end of the cone and eyes at the top. Add on some cotton for the beard or some small twigs for antlers for the reindeer – let your kids get creative! Then glue on a looped ribbon to hang them on the tree.

Cork Wreath

For all those wine lovers – this one is for you! Ditch the artificial wreaths and make something original, like a cork wreath. All you need is to collect enough wine corks (all the more reason to indulge) to make the appropriate size of wreath. Arrange them so the ends are touching, and glue them together. On the opposite end, there will be a slight gap as you form the circle, so just add in some red baubles in those spaces to connect everything together. Add a touch of holly to the top and find somewhere to display it.

The holidays are all about spending time together in our Ottawa homes and being thankful for what we have. So make it an extra special season by incorporating some sustainable, green holiday decorations into the mix this year and show some love for our beautiful planet.

From the entire Geoff & Bobbie Team, we wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season!
