12 Feb A New Ottawa Bridge
Ottawa Helping to Pay for Canada-US Bridge
Officials in Ottawa recently made the news because they’re thinking about buying Detroit land for a cross-border bridge project. Evidently, governments in Canada and the United States and discussing the right way to go about constructing this bridge and what purpose it would serve for both countries. This is an interesting development that I wanted to share with you!
More Information on The Proposed Bridge
According to the recent article I was reading, the bridge project would cost more than $2 billion to complete. It would entail adding a second span across the Detroit River between Detroit and Windsor.
The outgoing Canadian consul-general Roy Norton said the bridge is very important and should not be delayed.
Right now, Canada appears to be covering most of the costs associated with the project in both countries. Officials say they will recoup the upfront investment by charging tolls for both directions.
Officials are saying that they would like the bridge, to be called New International Trade Crossing, to be opened by 2020. Meanwhile, some opponents think it’s an unnecessary expense for the Canadian people.
Experts are now saying that if Canada starts purchasing land this year, they will have probably purchased most of the roughly 1,000 parcels to build the bridge by the end of 2015.
What Do You Think?
Should Canada Take up responsibility for investing in this cross-country bridge? Is it a wise investment of funds? I would love to hear what you have to think!
