15 Nov 4 Ways to Celebrate the Holidays in Ottawa
The holidays always feel like a magical and exciting time of year with a myriad of colourful decorations, events, and social get-togethers. If you’re looking for ways to celebrate the holidays in Ottawa, here are some of the top activities we recommend.
Alight at Night Festival
This family favourite always makes for a spectacular experience. Every year, Alight at Night Festival takes place at the Upper Canada Village. You and the family can wander through the dazzling village with lights strung everywhere for a truly magical setting. There are wagon rides, a life-sized toy train, and even horse-drawn carriage rides for a romantic date night. Don’t forget to step into the on-site store for freshly baked goods or enjoy a sit-down meal with three licensed restaurants to choose from. The festival starts on November 30th and runs in the evenings each weekend throughout December. It’s open every night from Boxing day until Jan 5th.
Stroll through the Christmas Market in Byward
The Byward Market is one of the oldest in Canada, and during the holidays, it’s a must-visit. This quaint and charming area of the city is a bustling hub any time of the year. During the annual Christmas Market, there’s a variety of things to browse, taste, drink, and do. Grab a beavertail and hot chocolate to stay warm and fueled while browsing! The Christmas Market happens on weekends in December from noon to 4 pm.
Visit Parliament Hill
Another great area of the city to explore is around Parliament Hill. As the capital of Canada, Ottawa knows how to do it up! The downtown area lights up starting December 6th. Seeing the combination of snow, lights, and Christmas décor alongside the stunning old architecture downtown will make you feel like you’re stepping into a scene from the classic movie Scrooge. Another ideal outing for a fun winter evening!
Make Gingerbread Men at Cumberland Village Museum
Speaking of classic, immerse yourself in some holiday traditions at the Cumberland Village Heritage Museum. Here you can create your own gingerbread men, get crafty making ornaments, and enjoy the sights throughout this old Christmas village. Runs weekends in December between 3 and 8 pm.
