Kanata, Ontario History
The friendly city of Kanata
is a suburban area located in the western part
of the city of Ottawa.
This important tech centre has a population of
90,000 residents and has experienced rapid growth
since its incorporation in 1978. The planned city
of Kanata was formed from portions of the townships
of March, Goulbourn
and Nepean. Kanata remained
a city until 2001, when the province created a
new unified city of Ottawa that included the city
of Kanata. Kanata is located just to the west
of the Greenbelt and it is one of the largest
of several communities that surround greater central
Ottawa.
Real Estate Development in Kanata
Mainly an agricultural-based
area until the 1960s, commercial development kicked
into high gear when commercial developer and planner
Bill Teron purchased over 3,000 acres (12 km²)
of rural land and set about building a model planned
community. Unlike other Ottawa suburbs, Kanata
was designed to integrate a mix of commercial
and residential developments. Protecting large
amounts of open space, the area was subdivided
into a series of unique planned communities. The
goal was for each of the communities to have their
own distinct commercial centres enhanced by cultural
diversity. These communities include Beaverbrook,
Bridlewood, Katimavik, Glen Cairn, Hazeldean,
Morgan's Grant, and Kanata Lakes.
